For Feigin, Lasry, Edens, Dinan, head coach Jason Kidd and the entire organization, Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, is a business unicorn. Thats just my view, Lasry said. So, these guys are thrown into a world where they're responsible for everything, they assume they know everything, and what their experience is. Now just, we've talked about your background. We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? Talk about the importance of having diversity in the front office particularly. We had to certainly do it on the resources, our facilities, we had to do it on the human capital, and then we had to change our whole perception which came from the owners on what we wanted to do on the court, which win an NBA championship and what we wanted to do off the court is be the innovators and be the leaders in the way we really operate. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. I mean, now that I worked for three owners that are kind of in finance and private equity and guys who take real big bets and everything, I don't know if I was so much of a risk taker as I was kind of attention deficit and impulsive. MILWAUKEE Bucks President Peter Feigin helped lead the team to its first championship in 50 years, and now he has the . Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. I talk about it all the time with my wife, with my brother, with everything. Im addicted now to the operating side of the challenge of constant improvement, and how would you look at an organization and dive in there and really look to re-engineer tweak, and build for revenue growth? Marc Lasry, the co-owner of the Bucks, joined The Run when his sons were students at Trevor. This is a human business. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? And again, it's kind of the relationship. Our expectation is to win a championship. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. And if nothing else, like we kind of, I always answer everything pretty simply. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. So, I think for myself to Coach Bud, to Jon, we all kind of are on the same page of preaching like, "This is a performance culture." Peter: is youve got to have so many opportunities and different variations to really, to really acquire different types of fans. How do you end up managing the importance of numbers and capital. Number one, obviously, because like you said, its rare air, but youre learning on the job. And kind of like who are intrinsically becoming Buck stars and having them be our influencers around the world and thinking about global campaign. People who do argue are kind of not allowed back.. How do we affect the community together? Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. His friends, while the games are suspended, are trying to stay as prepared as possible. John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. But this is literally a business based on humans and psychology and emotion and how we feel every day. There's got to be solutions. But it was so much fun. "We know the reality is 18 months ago, no one would've said Giannis is one of the top five players in the NBA, so we've had really what we would call the Giannis Effect," Feigin explains. Like its going to streaming, its going to over the top, that is a huge change from all these local teams depending and getting guaranteed large dollar values for regional sports deals. Were going to pay you, but hey, youre going to work. How do you balance with that and how do you create that menu that people can pick and choose from? Michael Red: Wow. Their experience is basketball. John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. Peter: Yeah, I think the credible and constancy is like NFTs and, are in the next phase. John: Thats awesome. He's also been quoted as saying he wants to play for the Bucks "forever" and he does not know if he could be "the same player" in a "flashy city." Because I know a lot of coaches, lot of presidents, lot of GMs, I run into them and I ask them, can I look at your ring? We're going to develop some residential and we'll hopefully have a great commercial tenant and we continue to build. Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. And then kind of understanding that he knew I was kind of keen on the operation side and understood a team and an organization's P&L for a good way. So I've been ticketing him with $5,000 tickets, $50,000 tickets with little notes. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. Peter: But one of the incredible things, alignment we have with myself, John Horst, whos our GM and coach Bud is like, weve got this undercurrent of constant improvement and kind of like never, pleased but never satisfied. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. Im like, we actually, might have a chance to get this done and to make a long story short, and unfortunately my twin brother thinks like I owe him a commission, for. What would you be doing? You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. Peter Feigin: I think building the relationship with Mark, probably through looking at other purchase opportunities and kind of talking through it. Off the court it is best practice. I know you love gear more than anybody. It's a simple filter to go through things, if we have to question it, we're pretty sure its wrong," shared Feigin. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. So, that part of it was awesome. I'll talk with her about her students and kind of support her while she's correcting her papers. How could it be?" How do we make this more than equal?" Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. Michael Red: And so, through all of the minutiae and all of 2020 and now going into the new season, which we're in now, managing to still focus the organization on winning the championship. Theres a lot of people that look up to you and want to be either the next Peter Feigin, or be an entrepreneur and do a startup. We should put our own definitions and we should continue to improve." I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. We've made it intimate with a 17,500-person crowd. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. A lot of fun. I volunteered/got myself pushed into the reset committee of the bubble committee on the NBA to do something that's never been done before. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. "Why would we wait till tomorrow when we can get it done today?" I'm so honored, man, to have you on the podcast. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. So first of all, the bubble was kind of like so exciting, surreal, and awesome. My father happened to pass away probably within a couple months and very close with Mark and Wes, who basically at that time said, Well, you now have to really consider this and do this. And at the time, I always say, I was their last hope because of the timing of the acquisition. I think we had like, "Oh, we had decent amount of African Americans. "Very simply, we went into the market and said, 'We're going to build this market. Let that person speak. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. Feigin is in charge of divvying up the five-man teams at the start of the session and typically includes himself on the strongest squad. You know I got my sources. Peter: Yeah, I think number one is to explain kind of a small market. How do we sit here and I think like, how could the Millwaukee Bucks not be, not Americas team, but Globals team. So, thank you for being on the cast today. Peter: it worked in such a great way for me and with a magic wand really evolved into one of the most incredible jobs ever. And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. That the only option we really had was to build grassroots and build relationships and take time across the entire community. Thats a stain on your career, Dan Feigin said. With your owners and partners and this great group of people you put together, whats the future look like for the Bucks and what can some of the fans expect in the upcoming season? But it was one of these kind of diversion life lessons that you don't know where life takes you and just take total opportunity for it. Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. How do you get people who care? Youve got Jamie Dimon, who is this incredible long-term equity holder who is done it and then youve got Mike Fascitelli whos really was the chairman and CEO of Vornado Real Estate in New York on the commercial real estate side. We deal, and weve had some meetings with our friends at the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin as they create a collective, weve certainly been tracking kind of whats going on. I think engagement and investment in the community and social responsibility is like a big deal. The ring features plenty of subtle and not so subtle Bucks symbolism. The Paul's, who acted in several other films including Double Trouble (1992), and The Road Raiders (1989), quickly became well known in the bodybuilding community for their great strength and power, as well as their rebellious barbarian attitude. And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. They all had the space, they're at Disney, they have all the amenities. Thats for every aspect of it. And I think of it, Michael, to answer the second part, it's like we thought we were woke. Youre going to have a lot of fun. How could we not be good at quick serve restaurants? And they were kind of stuck at the last minute deep in the summer. Peter: Well, I made one of the biggest mistakes ever to begin with. They were trying to think of something that would be like. Its not the right environment for everybody. And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. Does he pass enough? That was one of these monumental, incredible, awesome times to get it done. Peter: professionalized on a revenue basis, so yeah. "We didn't have much time," he says. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. But I will tell you that most cathartic incredible, awesome thing, which everybody told me and again, the collaborative is awesome. Peter: John, the best. Obviously, your assistant help set this up. Peter Feigin: I'm not a good example of life balance, because I kind of blend them in such a big way that my kids, my brothers, my mother, my wife, they're all a part of it. I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. Peters son, Thomas, and Dans son, Jackson, are both high school juniors and excellent players. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. Michael Red: One thing that impresses me about our organization is how diverse it is. Defenders are responsible for calling fouls. But yet, still being leaders with more than a vote movement, just amazing, amazing. We've made it really authentic and localized with what our food and beverage offerings are going to be. You can always have a kitchen with food in it. financial capital with human capital to end up with the right result, how is that math done in Peter Feigins head? He captained. How did that come together? You're certainly allowed to have fun, because we have fun. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. Peter: I went to Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. Even though you're at the World of Disney, even Disney after about 10 days, you're ready to get out of Disney no matter where you are. I will say one of the big advantages of the national basketball association is it truly is a collaborative, like on the court we are competitive. I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. It's there is no time balance, so it's kind of surreal. Proud of him and all the success. He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. If youre not playing defense, theyre going to call you out, said Woodhouse, who would temper his Friday night activities in anticipation of The Run. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. She is like, "We're in this together." So, it really is kind of like all of us working together to figure out what the balance is. This again becomes a platform of an NBA brand extension that just explodes with engagement. John: Lets step back. Youre unbelievably inspirational. Feigin's twin brother emphasized his brother's role in reshaping downtown. Thats what we call our volunteering.
